Medical marijuana users are always looking for new ways to use cannabis. Cannabutter is a great way to medicate while enjoying some of your favorite foods. Use cannabutter to add a little zing to any recipe that requires a touch of butter including cookies, brownies, and cakes. Read on to learn two of the easiest ways to make cannabutter from the comfort your own home.
It is important to know that the strength of your medical marijuana will determine the potency of your butter. To make sure your butter is as potent as possible, you will need to place your buds on a cookie sheet and warm them. Place them in a 240 to 250-degree oven for 30 to 60 minutes. This will start the decarboxylation process. Once you take the buds out of the oven, you can start to make your cannabutter.
Cannbutter’s Main Ingredients
If you plan on making cannabutter at home you will need the following:
- Small to medium saucepan
- Metal strainer
- Wooden spoon or ladle
- Container with a lid
- ½ pound to 1 pound of butter
- 1 to 2 ounces of medical marijuana buds, finely ground (The amount is up to you and will be determined by the potency you desire.)
Stove Top Method
When using the stove top method, which is the quicker method to make cannabutter, place the butter in a saucepan and melt it over low heat. Gradually add the medical marijuana buds, taking the time to stir thoroughly between each addition.
Simmer for approximately 45 minutes, or until small bubbles form on top. After the allotted amount of time, pour the butter through the strainer. This will separate the cannabutter from the plant tissue.
Gently press the plants against the side of the strainer to remove as much of the cannabutter as possible. Throw away any remaining plant matter.
Slow Cooker Method
If you want to use a slow cooker to make cannabutter, you will need to include approximately one cup of water, one pound of butter, and two ounces of medical marijuana buds. Turn the slow cooker to the lowest setting and stir thoroughly. Put the lid on the cooker and let simmer for up to 24 hours.
Stir the pot occasionally to ensure the ingredients are thoroughly mixed. The longer you allow the mixture to cook, the more potent the resulting cannabutter will be.
Once you’ve strained the crockpot cannabutter through either the metal strainer or a thick cheesecloth, you can set the butter in the refrigerator. As the butter becomes colder, it will harden and separate from the water.
Remove the butter and store it in an airtight container.
Homemade Cannabutter can have varying effects and potencies. It’s extremely important to try only a small amount of your end result and wait two-plus hours before ingesting more to avoid unwanted overmedication. When cooking or baking with cannabutter, always make sure to evenly distribute it throughout the recipe.
